Keeping the environment clean can begin at home, woven into everyday routines that make a difference. Since 1996, Sustainable Community Development Services (SCODE), based in Bahati, Nakuru, has embraced this idea.

The benefits go beyond environmental conservation. One father, speaking through Modern Energy Cooking Services, described how efficient stoves transformed his household: “For the first time since my wife departed, I now feel like I have a helper in the house…”

SCODE’s mission is to empower individuals, especially the poor, by encouraging green technologies and sustainable initiatives. The organization guarantees that communities can develop and flourish without exhausting natural resources.

Through partnerships with companies like Scode Limited, SCODE promotes energy‑efficient cooking technologies.

Among them is the Pawapot Electric Pressure Cooker, a multi‑functional appliance with 16 one‑touch programs, delay start, keep‑warm, and advanced safety features in a six‑liter stainless steel design. It simplifies, quickens, and increases the versatility of cooking.

Another innovation is the Scode Energy‑Saving Cooker, a small, green built‑in stove suitable for homes, camping, or small businesses. Its ceramic lining retains heat, reduces fuel consumption, lowers costs, and ensures even cooking. Portable stoves with ceramic lining, designed to fit into mud or concrete kitchen structures, provide efficient, long‑lasting cooking for households and institutions with permanent fireplaces.

SCODE advances cleaner energy technologies and sustainable land management through capacity building, market development, and applied research. Its vision is to be the leading NGO in effective and efficient cleaner energy solutions, providing long‑term sustainable livelihoods to Kenyan communities.

The organization’s work aligns with global priorities. The United Nations views clean cooking not just as an energy issue but as a “human development imperative” essential for achieving multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly health, gender equality, and climate action. Under SDG 7, the UN aims to ensure universal access to clean cooking fuels and technology by 2030.

From Bahati to kitchens across Kenya, SCODE demonstrates how cleaner energy technologies can transform lives, protect health, and conserve the environment.
