Kenya and the United Kingdom have reaffirmed their shared vision for climate-resilient communities and sustainable development, creating a robust platform for enhancing bilateral collaboration in addressing the climate crisis.

This commitment was highlighted during a recent visit by Neil Wigan, the British High Commissioner to Kenya, along with his delegation.

The Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, Deborah Barasa, has emphasized the growing partnership between the two nations.

“Over the years, our collaboration has flourished, particularly in key areas such as climate action and environmental sustainability,” she stated.

The meeting between CS Barasa and Commissioner Wigan centered on fortifying cooperation to tackle the pressing challenges posed by climate change.

“We discussed opportunities to expand joint action in vital areas, including climate adaptation, nature-based solutions, and green finance—essential pillars in achieving our shared climate goals,” Barasa explained.

CS Barasa has reiterated the Ministry's commitment to enhancing Kenya-UK relations by leveraging existing frameworks, such as the ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) and initiatives like the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) Programme.

“This programme, implemented across counties, aims to strengthen both county and national government capacities to manage climate risks, deliver locally-led resilience actions, and promote community participation in climate initiatives,” she added.

Additionally, Barasa has expressed gratitude to Commissioner Wigan for the UK’s unwavering support for Kenya’s climate and environmental priorities. She has appreciated his openness to exploring new avenues for collaboration, reinforcing the commitment of both nations to combat the climate crisis together.
